JJ – I am thinking that maybe we can also start to look at ‘horror’ – which is interesting in the sense that – I find – people in general have a thin skin in relation to recognising evil and things like that – i.e. Satanic. In the sense that – as humans – we want to escape suffering – or – even if it is more specific – to avoid being “cuckolded’ or whatever. So – what in your (and possibly my) native Indonesian culture has put one inside that framework of thinking. Is there some unique Indonesian “entity” or tradition or all of the above?
AE – I am being a little bit facetious here but I too think that in many (not all) places, especially, post-colonial (and post-West), people are perfectly willing to recognise evil entities and so on but the recognition isn’t possessed by the folk – that they are saturated in terror – in a way – the folk are citizens of a culture but in a passive way – not to proselytize as much as to share in a tradition.
JJ – If Indonesia is indeed post-colonial, then, this could perhaps be tied to the old way of thinking and speaking about the things that surrounded you – and to be honest – it is doubtful that most people will even be remotely familiar with a traditional way of regarding such things – although – some Western people might be – perhaps.
