I am Roblox, and today we’re going to go into the history of Roblox, describe what we do, and give you an overview of our missions and ideas.

You can see here we have pretty much everything we do. This all started as a passion project by two friends in New York. They wanted to combine their love of video games with their love of socializing with a game where you played as a character in an online world. So they came up with the idea of creating a platform where you could play online with friends in a really fun and deep way. They decided to put their creative ideas into the open so that other people could use them to make amazing games themselves and build a huge community around the platform.

They named it Roblox because Rob and Lars of the legendary hip hop duo Run-DMC, who had just released a song called “My Adidas” on the same day, were the first people they thought of when they created the concept. They had intended to make the first name “Roblox” be “Roblox Crew,” which is what Lars and Rob referred to themselves as in their songs. But when a friend who worked at Microsoft heard this and said they had to change the name because everyone who knows Microsoft will think of Roblox. He said they should make it something cool to avoid trouble, so the founders came up with the name Roblox and the rest was history.

The platform is built with the Lua programming language and a custom engine that makes it easy to program and build amazing user experiences. The first game Roblox released, “Creator Mode”, was a 2D first-person shooter where you could try your hand at creating content for your own game.

Just like on the PlayStation Network, Roblox games are stored and distributed through a central cloud platform. Over time, we’ve created advanced tools to make it easier for developers to upload their games to our cloud.
