If the 1980s were a boy’s thing, it was this. Like every kid with a gaming console, I collected stuffed cars. So I assumed that Carmageddon 2 was going to be an exclusive for a little while. It wasn’t. That much is obvious if you were watching the trailers in the run-up to the release. I did get to play it before it was released. I played it again before the midnight launch. It’s even more obvious now. Carmageddon 2 is as much for the grown-ups as it is for the kids.
Carmageddon 2 is a hilarious diatribe of over-the-top destruction. If you ever bought all the stuff for a Godzilla or Star Wars movie, you can build a car that can blast through buildings, punch through enemy cars, and even smash through buildings that you control. One of the problems with early entry into the stock car industry is that it took those market leaders decades to develop their capabilities. So there are now near-limitless possibilities. There’s really not much more to it than that. And Carmageddon 2 works great as a whole.
If you thought the original Carmageddon was crazy, wait until you see this one. It’s crazy to the extreme. The range of vehicles you can buy is almost as wide as the range of vehicles you can destroy. Now, there’s only so much you can do with a character that can shoot a missile from a toy truck, and that’s what your driver and co-pilot do in this game.
You can drive to a speed of 80mph, go around a track, and speed back to the start. As you race through each track, there’s always at least one enemy car on the screen. When you get hit, it’s the end of your ride. You can pick from three different cars, which can hit different speeds and maneuver in different ways. There are different models of car, so you can play with things like what type of spoiler is best for handling speed or the angle that the back of your car is best to fire from. And there are three different weapons to pick from. You can equip different weapons to suit your situation. At the beginning of the game, I equipped only the missile and the back-blast weapon. Later in the game I equipped the tire and the gas weapon.
A better way to say that is that the guns and missiles and tires that you start out with are usually effective weapons against a variety of enemies. If
