The Photoshop program is not the only tool available for digital painting. Corel Paint Shop Pro X5 is a good option for those who prefer the interface, but Photoshop, coupled with a Macintosh computer, offers many more options and features, and is the standard to which most artists aspire.
## Light and Dark
You can create some of the biggest changes in a portrait by adjusting the light and dark areas in a photograph. You can do so in a couple of ways:
* By fine-tuning the light and dark areas in your initial photograph, or through photo-editing software.
* By painting directly onto a photograph.

Some advanced features are available only in the most expensive version of Photoshop.
Highlights:
Multiple Layers: Photoshop CS6 and later versions introduced a new advanced feature called layers. By merging many layers you can lay down an image that is comprised of multiple layers of a single image that can be modified separately, which gives you full control of the final result.
Merging Layers: You can merge one or more layers in Photoshop to create a new image. When you merge layers you can use the Layer dialog box to specify which layers you want to include in the merged image.
Mask: One of the advanced features in Photoshop is the ability to mask images. A mask is a special layer within the image that allows you to hide other parts of the image and leave the rest. You can use masks to hide parts of images on layers that you do not want to modify. When you mask an image, you can color in areas you do not want to modify.
Clone Stamps: Photoshop CS6 introduced the ability to clone one area of an image onto another area of the same image. You can use this tool to quickly and easily create something from one place in an image.
Text: The Elements’ text tool offers many advanced options, including the ability to change font weight, use multiple font colors, and create vertical and horizontal text. It also offers other text editing capabilities such as anti-aliasing, optical effects, and kerning. You can also use the text tool to create a selection from text in another image.
Gradients: Photoshop includes a gradient tool that lets you create and edit gradient images. It allows you to quickly create gradients, perfect for home decor and other projects. You can also change the gradient effect on a single layer or on multiple layers. You can specify gradient direction, gradient type and whether you are using a linear or radial gradient.
Lens Filter: Lens filters are a relatively new feature in Photoshop that allow you to apply special effects to your image to create lens-like effects. They are

Launch Photoshop from your hard drive, and go to Photoshop (see Figure 1-1).

Select the Brush tool in the toolbox (see Figure 1-2), and set the size and shape of the brush in the Options bar. Depending on what you intend to do, you should set the size of the brush to cover the area you want to paint on. Click on the Dura Brush icon in the Options bar to enter the brush settings. The brush should have opacity set to about 40–50% to keep the hard edges of the brush visible.

Click on the Create or Use button in the Options bar to bring up the options for brushes and pens (see Figure 1-3). Click the plus sign (+) to add new brushes, or use any of the previously saved brushes. You can also download new brushes from online sources. For details on brushes, see Appendix.

Use the brush to paint an area that will fill in a layer. Paint away! You have a new layer with the paint on it.
## Saving Brushes

Because brushes are so valuable, it is wise to save them for future use.

Right-click on the brush tool you are using, and then click on the Save tool in the pop-up menu. This will bring up the Save brush dialog.

Click the Color Icon , and select a folder location for the brushes. Click the OK button to save the brush (see Figure 1-4).

What’s New in the Photoshop?
1. Double-click on the [Clone Stamp tool] below the Brush tool to select it. It appears in the Tools palette.
2. Click on the Brush tool.
3. Click once to select the Brush tool. Click again to select the [Clone Stamp tool]. Notice that a selection box has appeared around the Brush tool. This allows you to see the Brush tool and the Clone Stamp tool separately. In this example, it’s called the Brush tool because you’re about to use the Brush tool. To erase, drag the Brush tool over the area you want to erase. You can use a combination of the Brush tool and the Eraser tool, or the Eraser tool only.
4. Drag the Brush tool around the image.
5. Press and hold Alt (Option) to activate the Clone Stamp tool. Press and hold Ctrl (Control) to deselect the Brush tool.
6. The highlights and shadows of the image will change color. A circular brush shape appears.
7. Repeat the steps from Step 3 to erase the image.
