Hydraulic power was first used in the early 20th century, and the first application was in vehicles. The engine used for the first cars, the petrol engine, was invented in Germany by Gottlieb Daimler in 1885. The first production car made by Daimler was the Black Maria of 1886. Frederick Lanchester (1857-1943) was one of the earliest designers of the vehicle. He began his career in the early 1880s at the Sheffield Scientific School, as a student of Francis Villiers Stanford, where he studied applied mechanics and electric machinery. His first automobile, the Autocycle, was developed in 1892. In 1888 he produced the world’s first four-wheeled vehicle, a cycle-hockeycar. In 1894 Lanchester also began to develop what became the most widely produced Lanchester four-wheeler, the Firefly. From 1900, Lanchester worked for Coventry Climax where he developed the first commercially successful two-stroke engine. This engine still in use in at least 15 motorcycle models. He collaborated with B.E.S. Ingle to produce a design for an aircraft engine. The two also tried to found a production company, but neither this attempt nor the aircraft engine (the first manmade aircraft engine) was successful, although Lanchester later worked as a consultant for the National Gas Turbine Establishment, helping to develop the Rolls-Royce Conway. In the United Kingdom, the term “automobile” was first officially applied to an automobile only under the 1895 Registration Act, when they were incorporated under the name of the “Automobile Club”. Lanchester had built a four-wheeled vehicle in 1892 which was first called the “Crombie”, and the first to be called the “automobile” was the “Crombie automobile” built in 1896, by Warwick Brain. In 1903 he organized a company named “The Crombie Motor Company”, which began to sell cars. The same year he moved to Coventry where he became technical director of the “B.E.S. Ingle Company Ltd.” which had developed the first modern internal-combustion engine (1884-1886), which was called “The Coventry Auto-Cide”. The engine was an atmospheric engine, using a carbon pool to conduct heat away from the engine, developed in collaboration with Frederick Simms and named “The A.C.D.”. In 1896 the company was renamed “The Coventry-Sim
